The End Of An Era! Gisele Bundchen Set To Retire From The Runway.

Gisele Bundchen
Brazilian supermodel Gisele Bundchen, the world’s top-earning model, will take her final sashay down the catwalk at Sao Paulo Fashion Week (SPFW), the same event where she made her debut 20 years ago.

The 34-year-old Brazilian bombshell announced last month she was retiring from runway modeling, saying she wanted to spend more time with her husband, New England Patriots star quarterback Tom Brady, and their two children, Benjamin and Vivian.

Brazilian model Gisele Bundchen presents a creation from Colcci Winter 2014 collection during Sao Paulo Fashion Week
“My body tells me if what I do is worth it, and it asked to stop. I respect my body, it’s a privilege to be able to stop,” she told Brazilian newspaper Folha de Sao Paulo.

She will continue modeling off the runway and promoting her lingerie line, Gisele Bundchen Intimates, launched in 2011 for the Brazilian label Hope.

Her final runway show, for Brazilian label Colcci, is a symbolic return to her roots. Bundchen and SPFW were both just starting out two decades ago when she had her first show there, taking the runway for local label Zoomp at 14 years old. It was the start of big things for Bundchen, who went on to model for major fashion houses such as Alexander Wang, Balenciaga, Carolina Herrera, Chanel, Louis Vuitton, Valentino, Versace and Victoria’s Secret.

According to Forbes magazine, she has been the highest-paid model in the world for the past eight years, with $47 million in earnings last year. Only recently, she signed her largest ever contract – worth more than $25 million, according to Forbes with US sports apparel firm Under Armour.

“It’s marvelous she’s leaving the runway at a moment when she’s at the height of her powers. It’s an intelligent decision,” said Dilson Stein, the talent scout who discovered Bundchen in 1994 during a modeling workshop in the small city of Horizontina, in her native state of Rio Grande do Sul.

Bundchen began her career when the so-called “heroin chic” of pale, angular models like Kate Moss was the prevailing aesthetic in high fashion. By 1999, she became the face of what Vogue magazine, splashing her across its cover, called “The return of the sexy model.”

Stein remembers being wowed by the willowy girl of German descent, with her long blonde hair, sun-kissed skin and athletic build.

“I saw something in her. I knew she would be the great model of the future,” he told AFP.

Bundchen is now expected to turn her focus to print ad campaigns.

Let’s Get It On – The Life And Music Of Marvin Gaye Starring Lloyd Cele

lets-get-it-on-lloyd-cele-feedback-musiq
Joburg Theatre is proud to announce the star casting of award-winning musician Lloyd Cele in the international production of Let’s Get It On – The Life And Music Of Marvin Gaye: on The Mandela stage for a limited season from May 7th to May 16th 2015.

Lloyd recently won ‘Best R&B’ single for All I Need Is You at the Metro FM Awards and says this is a perfect fit for the show. “Marvin Gaye has always been one of my idols, and I’m extremely excited to have been given this opportunity to portray this music icon on stage.”

Let’s Get It On is produced by Helpman award-winning producer Simon Myers and Moira Bennett from Room 8 productions whose recent shows include The Man In Black – The Life Of Johnny Cash, At Last – The Etta James Story and Take Me Home Country Roads – The John Denver Story.

This is their first production in South Africa. The producers were very keen to cast a local singing personality for the show and found their star in Lloyd Cele.
Unknown-2
Lloyd Cele shot to fame as the runner up in Idols in 2010.  He has since won numerous awards; SAMA award for Best Pop Album as well as being a Metro FM, Channel O and Wawela nominee.

He’s also a crowd favourite at all major festivals nationwide.  He is an executive producer and a diverse artist who plays guitar, piano, bass and saxophone.

Let’s Get It On is a two-hour narrative concert that celebrates the life and music of the multi-talented musician, singer and songwriter acknowledged as The Prince of Motown – The Prince of Soul.

The show features some of Marvin’s most beloved songs including ‘I Heard It Through The Grapevine’, ‘Ain’t No Mountain High Enough’, his stunning spiritual masterwork ‘What’s Going On’, the Grammy Award-winning ‘Sexual Healing’ and many more.

The show explores Marvin’s humble beginnings, his troubled relationship with his father, his search for meaning and the music that defined a generation.

The voice that formed the soundtrack to countless liaisons in the ‘60s and ‘70s was tragically silenced thirty years ago – and the scale of that tragedy is reinforced through the retelling of his story.   From the opening number – Stars and Stripes Marvin-style – to the finale, the show channels ‘the main man’ in a tribute that is more music than musical, more lyrics than script.
Unknown-1
Lloyd will be backed by some of Australia’s finest and funkiest musicians, The Funk City Band, and introducing Vika Bull. Vika’s character is an amalgam of the three main women in Marvin’s life; Tammy Tyrell, Diana Ross and Anna Gordy.

Vika is firmly established as one of Australia’s most powerful female voices having supported legendary musicians such as Bob Dylan, Billy Joel, Sting and Joe Cocker.

Performances for Let’s Get It On – The Life And Music Of Marvin Gaye begin in The Mandela at Joburg Theatre on Thursday May 7th and the limited season must close on Saturday May 16th.  Shows are at 8pm Thursdays to Saturdays, and 3pm on Sundays.

Lloyd-Cele
A little more about LLOYD CELE

With a third album having been released in September 2014 and three brand new singles out at the same time in three different languages, Lloyd Cele is out to prove that good things happen in 3’s.

The avid music lover turned Idols runner-up then SAMA winner, Walela Award, Channel O Award and Metro FM Award nominee, is looking to build on the success of his 1st single “Tonight” that features as the theme song for Top Billing by releasing Grey Matter on September 22nd 2014.

Having worked with a number of SA’s top artists in Cassper Nyovest, the Soweto Gospel Choir, Brian Temba as well as CH2, Lloyd wanted to bring a diverse mix of influences to his 3rd album, much like he has done on his previous 2 albums ONE and NO LIMITS.

Lloyd’s sound is about embracing South Africa’s diverse culture, racial groups, and musical influences and fusing them together in his music.

GREY MATTER, largely written by Lloyd himself, is no different and this is highlighted by the unprecedented, simultaneous release of 3 singles to launch the album. “Ngiyakudinga Mtakwethu” (All I Need Is You) a Zulu song featuring Brian Temba – the recent winner of Best R&B Single at the Metro FM Awards – the Afrikaans single “Dans Met My” and an English single “Made For Love” have all been unleashed onto the airwaves at the same time and have been play-listed on the top radio stations for those genres.

“This is a 1st landmark occasion in South African radio airwaves, to have 3 songs in 3 languages all play-listed at the same time on the different radio stations that appeal to those genres.”

This marks an exciting period in Lloyd’s life in which he further seeks to cement top spot on the charts and unite the people of South Africa through music.

Lloyd encourages all people to reach for their dreams and never give up. All things are truly possible and with Grey Matter it could very well by 3 time’s a charm.

Scooping away the award in the Young Entrepreneur of the Year category, Sylvester Chauke, Chief Architect at DNA Brand Architects, said that this award was confirmation that the company was headed towards an upward trajectory and that the company was indeed contributing to the building of the South African economy.

“I know many young entrepreneurs who wake up every morning to open doors to their enterprises. I thank the SA Premier Business Awards for this category. It recognises the efforts of young entrepreneurs across the land and the role they play in the fight against youth unemployment in our country. I thank my super awesome team that relentlessly support the vision as well as big business that support our business daily”, said Chauke.

A fundamental issue for Sylvester is how South Africans can win the war against Youth Unemployment in our country. On a daily basis, South Africans are faced with the depressing facts of the high unemployment rate in our country.  However, Sylvester is not someone to regurgitate on the doom and gloom of these facts, but rather sees this as an opportunity for a societal change and in particular, youth involvement in solving this major challenge.

“Youth Unemployment is a disturbing factor in South Africa, however with the power we have as youth owned businesses, we can start reversing the trend by building sustainable small enterprises across our land. This award confirms that we are doing just that and we are keen for the future”, he concludes.

The Greatest Love of All – The Whitney Houston Show starring Belinda Davids

1000036

After debuting with a sold out 6-week run in Joburg last year, The Greatest Love of All – The Whitney Houston Show starring Belinda Davids will be returning to the Joburg Theatre for a limited season from 22 January – 15 February 2015.

This brilliant concert featuring South Africa’s own Belinda Davids is equal parts fun, touching and uplifting. Accompanied by a live band and dancers, Davids pays tribute to one of the world’s most revered singers by performing over 2 hours of Houston’s pop hits.

And there is no person better equipped to do so. In addition to having a voice described as “jaw-droppingly similar” to the pop diva, Davids openly acknowledges that Houston is her personal idol and was the original inspiration for her own career when she began singing at the age of 14.

“I want people to come and remember Whitney when she was at the top of her game and when she was fabulous”, says Davids.

And people all over the world have done exactly that, with South Africa, New Zealand, Singapore, Canada and the USA already hosting sold-out performances in the show’s first year of touring.

Unknown

The show includes over 20 of Houston’s most popular tracks taken from the full span of her career, including ‘I Will Always Love You’, ‘I Wanna Dance With Somebody’, ‘Didn’t We Almost Have It All’, ‘I’m Every Woman’, ‘Exhale (Shoop Shoop)’, ‘Million Dollar Bill’ and more.

Davids will again be directed by Showtime Management CEO John Van Grinsven Snr. and joined on tour by the production team responsible for the worldwide hit show Michael Jackson HIStory starring Kenny Wizz.

THE GREATEST LOVE OF ALL opens on The Mandela stage at Joburg Theatre on January 22nd and will run until February 15th. The show runs from Thursdays – Saturdays at 8pm and Sundays at 2pm. Ticket prices range from R160 to R350, and are on sale by visiting www.joburgtheatre.com, or by calling the theatre’s direct ticketing line on 0861 670 670. Discounted rates for groups of ten or more are available by calling the theatre on 011 877 6853.

A little more on Belinda Davids

Belinda Davids was born in Port Elizabeth, South Africa, and began performing professionally at the age of 14. She has never had vocal training and is blessed with a 4 octave vocal range, and hence the ability to sing any genre. Her musical heart has always been R&B; Belinda’s inspirations as a child were Aretha Franklin, Anita Baker, Chaka Khan, Donny Hathaway, Michael Jackson and the one artist whom she still, to this day, honours in every show she performs – Whitney Houston.

As a young girl one of the very first LP’s Davids ever owned was a song called “Hold Me” by Teddy Pendergrass and Whitney Houston. The quality and style Whitney portrayed in this song struck a cord and Davids’ fascination with the icon grew. She sang Whitney’s music at every chance: at family gatherings, talent competitions and to friends whilst playing on the street. Like many young girls at that time her bedroom walls were plastered with posters and magazine cut-outs of the icon. Whitney’s influence was so strong it inspired everything from her dress sense to her hairstyles.

As a young woman Belinda had the burning desire to live out her dreams and follow in her idols footsteps. She took on the club circuit and her performances left many people amazed at how similar she sounded to the icon.

In the mid 90’s Belinda caught the eye of record executives at Tusk Records, which spawned the album “Belinda Davids”. Three of the songs on this album, which Belinda wrote, were released as singles: “This I Swear”, “This Is My Life” and “We Go Together”. The latter was number one for six weeks in South Africa.

Unknown-2

Davids promoted her album all over South Africa for a number of years at various hotels, clubs & cabarets. She opened shows for many international acts when they visited South Africa including Michael Jackson’s History Tour, The Manhattans, The Temptations and Peaches and Herbs. Years after her debut album Davids decided to travel abroad to expand her musical career, which took her to Dubai, London and Hong Kong to perform in major hotels and clubs, with renowned success.

Whilst performing “I Will Always Love You” at a hotel in Hong Kong she was requested by the audience to sing acapella as they thought she was lip-syncing to the original Whitney Houston song, after which she received a standing ovation.

After many years on the road she finally settled in Los Angeles where she started to focus on getting her solo career back on track. In L.A she collaborated with R&B singer/producer Sam Salter who worked on a couple of her promotional tracks. She also caught the attention of many R&B artists who asked her to perform and tour with them, such as Keyshia Cole, Monica, Johnny Gill, Kelly Price and Keri Hilson. She appeared on The Jay Leno Show and The George Lopez Show as a back-up vocalist for Monica.

In 2015 Belinda Davids will once again showcase her exquisite voice as she takes on the lead role in the Showtime Management production, The Greatest Love of All – The Whitney Houston Show, a show dedicated to keeping alive the music and spirit of the late, great and incomparable Whitney Houston.
